JAMMU, Aug 4: The Sanskrit Week celebrations commenced today at Shri Ranbir Campus, Central Sanskrit University, Jammu, amidst a solemn and traditional Vedic ambience.
The event witnessed the gracious presence of distinguished scholars, faculty members, Sanskrit enthusiasts, and students from across the region.
The programme began with a serene Vedic invocation rendered by Dr Anaymani Tripathi and students of the campus, which infused the atmosphere with spiritual energy and auspiciousness.
Prof Satish Kumar Kapoor, Head of the Department of Sanskrit Literature and the convener of the programme, highlighted the significance of Sanskrit Week as a collective effort to reconnect contemporary academic enquiry with India’s timeless intellectual and cultural traditions.
The chief guest, Padma Shri Prof Vishwamurti Shastri, in his keynote address, reflected on the enduring relevance of Sanskrit as not only the language of India’s ancient wisdom but also a guiding framework for modern intellectual pursuits. He expressed concern over the gradual erosion of the Guru–Shishya (teacher–student) tradition, noting that while teachers once commanded immense reverence, today’s students often lack the attentiveness and discipline that defined classical education. He stressed the urgent need to re-establish the ethos of respect and receptivity within the academic culture.
The event was presided over by Prof Sridhar Mishra, Director of Shri Ranbir Campus. In his presidential remarks, he emphasized the campus’s ongoing efforts to re-present Sanskrit in a modern academic context without compromising its traditional roots. He reiterated the vision of making Sanskrit not merely a subject of study but a living stream of thought.
The Registrar of Central Sanskrit University attended the function as the guest of honour. In his address, he underscored the importance of institutional commitment in sustaining linguistic and cultural heritage in the 21st century.
The event was further graced by Dr Ramdas Sangotra and Ram Babu, both eminent Sanskrit practitioners and cultural custodians associated with Gita Press, Gorakhpur. The programme was conducted by Dr Praveen Mani Tripathi. Dr Madan Kumar Jha delivered the vote of thanks.
Throughout this week-long celebration, the campus will host a range of activities including classical competitions, cultural performances, literary dialogues, and scholarly lectures.
