JAMMU, Mar 27: Samooh Theatre commemorated World Theatre Day by staging a compelling adaptation of the renowned satirical masterpiece “Bholaram da Jeev” along with “Munshi Ji”, under the direction of Dr. Sudhir Mahajan.
The lead role in “Bholaram da Jeev” was powerfully portrayed by veteran actor Rajinder Kumar Narang, a senior and highly respected figure in Jammu’s theatre scene, known for his memorable performances in numerous challenging roles over the decades.
The play shines a sharp light on the grim realities of bureaucratic red-tapism, corruption, and the endless struggles of the common man trapped in a system plagued by insensitivity and endless delays. Harishankar Parsai’s classic story “Bholaram Ka Jeev” remains one of the most potent satirical works in Hindi literature. Through biting irony, dark humour and sharp wit, it exposes how even in death, an ordinary poor man remains entangled in the web of official apathy and administrative negligence.
The performance evoked deep emotions of pain, helplessness, and frustration while raising pertinent questions about the functioning of our administrative system.
The second presentation, “Munshi Ji”, was brilliantly performed by Manat Bhau and Arun Jit Sharma.
Arun Sharma also assisted in the direction of the play, while Aman Verma handled stage management and Shaleen Mahajan managed the properties.
The performances left the audience spellbound and prompted serious reflection on the social and administrative structures that continue to burden the common citizen, particularly the weaker sections of society. With its strong message, engaging dramatic situations, and timeless relevance, the production once again highlighted the power of theatre as a medium for social awareness.
On this occasion, the senior Stage and T. V actor Arvind Anand graced as the chief guest while Keshav Chopra was the guest of honour.
A large number of theatre lovers, students, writers, and art enthusiasts attended the event. Prominent among those present were Subah Jamwal, Shiv Dev Singh, J R Sagar, Vasant Vijogi Sachin Salhotra, Sanjeev Sharma and many others.
