UDHAMPUR, Sept 19: National Conference (NC) additional general secretary and former Minister, Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, has urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to conduct a comprehensive survey in areas hit by land sinking, triggered by torrential rains, flash floods, and cloudbursts.
During his visit to village Sundla in block Khoon, Tehsil Majalta of Udhampur district, where over 30 houses were submerged due to massive land sinking, Sadhotra interacted with affected families and visited the relief camp set up by the administration. He acknowledged the Government’s immediate response but stressed that long-term measures were urgently needed.
Expressing anguish over the loss of more than 30 houses, Sadhotra noted that victims were living in distress as makeshift tents had been damaged by continuous rains, leaving children and elderly exposed to harsh conditions. Families, he said, had also lost all basic belongings, including bedding, utensils and clothing.
Sadhotra announced he would take up the matter with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for allotment of five marlas of land to each affected family in erosion-hit areas of Jammu region. He also called for urgent financial assistance and adequate support for reconstruction of houses before the onset of winter. “It is not just about shelter but about restoring a sense of security and normalcy in their lives,” he said.
Emphasizing the need for a policy framework, he stressed that temporary relocation alone would not solve the humanitarian crisis. Long-term planning and disaster preparedness were necessary, he said, urging the administration and disaster management agencies to identify vulnerable zones and adopt preventive measures. Sadhotra assured victims of his continued support.
