MOSCOW, Jan 3: Russia has sharply criticised the reported U.S. military strikes on Venezuela, calling it a clear violation of international law and an unacceptable use of force against a sovereign state.
Russian officials said the actions breach the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and seriously undermine global stability.
Moscow rejected the reasons cited by Washington for the military operation, including claims related to fighting drug trafficking or security threats. Russian authorities stressed that such arguments do not provide any legal justification for launching strikes on another country and insisted that Venezuela does not pose a direct threat that would allow the use of force under international law.
Russia also warned that the reported strikes risk further destabilising the region and could lead to dangerous consequences beyond Venezuela. Officials said unilateral military actions weaken international institutions and set a troubling precedent that could encourage similar interventions elsewhere in the world.
Reaffirming its support for Venezuela, Russia accused the United States of interfering in the internal affairs of an independent nation and attempting to impose its will through military pressure. Moscow called on the international community to uphold international law and prevent further escalation, stressing the need for dialogue and diplomatic solutions rather than the use of force.
