JAMMU, Dec 18: Government has authorized all Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) and Assistant Regional Transport Officers (ARTOs) to exercise the powers of Executive Magistrates within their respective territorial jurisdictions across Jammu and Kashmir.
An official notification issued by the Secretary, Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, stated that the empowerment has been granted under sub-section (1) of Section 14 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The notification formally appoints all RTOs and ARTOs to function as Executive Magistrates as per the provisions of the new criminal procedure law.
According to the order, the powers will be exercised within their respective areas of jurisdiction and will remain in force until further orders. The move is aimed at strengthening administrative and enforcement mechanisms, particularly in matters relating to transport regulation, public order, and implementation of statutory provisions.
