RTI activist seeks multi-tier parking at GMC, SMGS

JAMMU, Nov 29: RTI activist Balvinder Singh has urged the Government and the Health Department to immediately address the severe parking shortage at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and SMGS Hospital.
Singh said both hospitals have expanded their bed capacity over the years—GMC from 500 to over 1,000 beds and SMGS from 150 to 750 beds, with 250 more expected soon—but parking facilities have not been upgraded accordingly.
He noted that despite the best efforts of hospital authorities, the existing parking space is far too limited to meet current needs.
The activist stressed that visitors are forced to park on congested approach roads and restricted zones, leading to heavy traffic jams and frequent challans.
He said the situation is causing inconvenience to patients, attendants, and even emergency vehicles.
Singh demanded the construction of multi-tier parking structures at both hospitals, calling it the only long-term solution to the worsening crisis.
He warned that the problem will intensify as the patient load in Jammu continues to rise and urged the government to act promptly in the public interest.
