This has reference to the article ‘Civil society’s role’ by Dhurjati Mukherjee. In t his write up the author has very well explained the need to have a civil society.
In a democratic nation like India, the role of civil society is of great importances. A democracy can survive only if it has a mechanism of checks and balances in place. Otherwise there is the danger of the country metamorphosing into a dictatorship.
The civil society is not there to intervene in the functioning of the elected Government(s) but to guide and seek condition in which fundamental rights guaranteed to citizen are protected.
The author has rightly suggested that the civil society should be strengthened and given a programmes in areas such as health, sanitation housing etc.
