The Supreme Court today refused to grant any immediate relief to diesel taxi operators in Himachal Pradesh to ply their vehicles en route Rohtang pass after noting that the ice in that area should remain white. The plea was filed by Himachal Taxi Operators Union. A bench, headed by Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, while refusing to any immediate relief to them, said, “The ice in Rohtang should remain white.”
Taxi operators and hoteliers and Himachal Taxi Operators’ Union had moved the Supreme Court against the high congestion charges imposed by the National Green Tribunal on vehicles going to Rohtang Pass in Kullu district.
The NGT, in its landmark judgement, had restricted the number of vehicles passing through Rohtang Pass, for tourism purposes to 600 petrol and 400 diesel per day on first-come, first-serve basis.
It also directed that each vehicle allowed would pay an environmental cess. The NGT had also directed the state government not to allow diesel-run vehicles for tourism purpose to Rohtang Pass. (UNI)
