Srinagar, Mar 31: The Government has informed the Legislative Assembly that road accidents in the Union Territory have declined over the past three years, attributing the trend to sustained enforcement and road safety measures.
Replying to a question tabled by MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar, the Transport Department said accidents dropped from 6,120 in 2023 to 5,726 in 2024 and further to 5,287 in 2025.
The Government said multiple interventions were implemented, including over 10,000 annual awareness programmes, health and eye check-ups for drivers, and emergency response training.
Enforcement measures were strengthened with the deployment of interceptor vehicles, highway patrol units, breath alcohol analysers and body-worn cameras. The Motor Vehicles Department shifted to a 100 per cent e-challaning system, issuing 52,543 challans in 2025 compared to 40,197 in 2024.
Vehicle seizures rose to 1,528, while 1,641 driving licences were suspended and over 10,000 vehicles were blacklisted in 2025.
The Government said Intelligent Traffic Management Systems have been installed in Jammu and Srinagar, with a Rs 107.32 crore project planned to expand electronic enforcement to other areas.
Under the Road Accident Victim Fund, compensation of Rs 1 lakh is provided for death, Rs 75,000 for permanent disability, Rs 50,000 for grievous injuries and Rs 10,000 for minor injuries.
A total of Rs 1,153.10 lakh has been released, of which Rs 914.90 lakh has been utilised.
The Government said continued enforcement, awareness and infrastructure improvements are contributing to safer roads in the Union Territory.
