JAMMU, Jan 28: The police foiled protest rally of retired (VRS/GHS) State Road Transport Corporation employees and workers towards Civil Secretariat here today.
A large number of voluntarily retired and golden hand shake accorded J&K SRTC employees under the leadership of Dev Raj Bali, president All J&K SRTC Retired Employees Association assembled near Exhibition Ground at Press Club here at around 10 am. They held protest demonstration there for about an hour and shouted slogans against State Transport authorities and management of the SRTC. The employees were also raising slogans in support of their demands.
Senior members Dev Raj Bali, Balwinder Singh, Surinder Singh, Asan Elahi, B V Sharma, Surjit Singh and others addressed the gathering and criticized the SRTC authorities for denying dues to the VRS given and golden hand shake accorded employees. They said despite commitment to clear all the dues within 60 days, nearly 670 VRS given workers and many GHS workers are still struggling for the last three years to get their arrears. The workers are demanding release of 126 slabs of Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) and arrears of 6th Pay Commission. The management of the SRTC has failed to do justice with these workers.
Carrying banners and placards in hands, the retired SRTC workers then tried to take out protest rally towards Civil Secretariat. As they moved towards Dogra Chowk and Lower Gumat, a strong contingent of police intercepted them at the Dogra Chowk and stopped their onwards movement. The agitating employees resisted the police action but they could not move ahead and then were made to move back to the Exhibition Ground. Then after staging protest dharna near Press Club for some time, the retired SRTC workers then dispersed.
Later, a deputation of these agitating workers led by Mr Bali met the newly inducted Minister for Transport and CAPD Ch Ramzan and discussed the pending issues of the VRS/GHS given employees of the SRTC. The new Minister listened to their issues patiently and assured to resolve the same shortly.
