Restrictive orders continue in southern Nepal district

KATHMNADU, Mar 22 : Restrictive orders were re-imposed on Sunday in southern Nepal’s Kapilvastu district that had witnessed a clash between two communities turn violent.

As the situation remained tense, the District Administration Office, Kapilvastu re-imposed the restrictive orders in parts of Maharajgunj Municipality in the district.

According to Janardan Gautam, Chief District Officer of Kapilvastu, the step was taken as per the decision of the district security committee.

The order restricts people from making a gathering, public meeting, rallies and demonstrations in different parts of the municipality.

On Saturday morning, a group of Hindus observing Navaratri festival were reciting bhajans in Bargadwa area of Maharjung municipality when a group of Muslims celebrating Eid opposed it saying the music was too loud for them, police said.

The friction resulted in the clash between the two groups and as the clash turned violent, injuring at least 20 people, including security personnel, the police said, adding, they used baton charge and threw tear gas cells to disperse the crowd.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, a meeting of representatives from different stakeholder groups, political parties and civil society was held at the initiative of the District Administration Office, Kapilvastu decided to help in maintaining calm and peace and work towards bringing about communal harmony in the district, officials said.
