Srinagar, June 25: All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary and Incharge of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Syed Nasir Hussain, today reiterated the Congress party’s demand for the restoration of full Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, along with a financial package and governance on par with other States of the country.

Addressing reporters at the party headquarters, Hussain accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central Government of failing to honor its commitment to restore Statehood, despite repeated assurances by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament. “Both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister promised to restore Statehood after Assembly elections. But the Government has not fulfilled its promise,” he said.

Hussain also criticized the Government for what he called its tendency to resort to emotional blackmail and historical rhetoric when confronted with serious national challenges such as intelligence failures, rising unemployment, and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. “Whenever the BJP Government gets caught, it starts digging up graves and emotionally blackmailing people instead of answering real questions,” he said.
Commenting on recent security lapses, Hussain acknowledged a “serious intelligence failure” behind the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that left 26 people dead. “The Home Minister himself admitted the lapse. The CRPF had to step in because there was no Army presence in the area. If that is not a failure, then what is?” he said.
Reaffirming the Congress position, Hussain said, “Our demand is simple and clear-full Statehood, a financial package, and the right to rule themselves as per the Indian Constitution,” he said.
On party strategy, he emphasized strengthening the Congress organization in both Jammu and Kashmir. “Only a strong Congress, capable of independently contesting elections, can decisively defeat the BJP,” he said.
Acknowledging internal weaknesses, Hussain admitted the party’s poor performance in Jammu, where it secured only one seat. “There are issues, and we will address them. Strengthening the party structure is our top priority,” he said.
He also accused the Government of ignoring key issues like poverty, unemployment, and Chinese aggression. “This Government does not want to talk about real problems-it prefers to distract the public with history,” he added.
