Srinagar, July 15: With authorities failing to ensure accountability, consultant doctors at GMC Baramulla reportedly leave their stations well before the scheduled time of 5 pm, leaving patients to face difficulties.
Around 4:45 pm today, consultation rooms that should have been staffed were found without doctors, while patients waited without assistance.
In many departments, senior residents were also absent, failing to discharge their duties. It is alleged that these residents delegate their responsibilities to interns, who are left to attend to patients.
Locals said there is no proper accountability and that medical students are often stationed to handle patients, raising serious questions about the functioning of the medical college.
“This has been happening for months. All the consultants leave their stations around 4 pm and leave medical students to attend to patients,” said Tariq Ahmad, a local resident.
It is further alleged that when postgraduate students leave, they hand over responsibilities to interns, who are then left to handle emergencies as well as OPD cases.
The locals have demanded that duty rosters be published and made available to the public so people know which doctors are on duty during the day and night.
“We will raise the issue with the authorities, especially the minister. At the same time, we urge the Principal and the Medical Superintendent to look into the matter,” locals said.
They termed the situation an injustice to the people of Baramulla and lambasted the hospital authorities for inaction despite being fully aware of what is happening on the ground.
“There are residential quarters available, and these doctors can stay there. But they disappear by 4 pm when they are supposed to be available from 9 to 5 as per official timings,” a local added.
The Principal of GMC Baramulla did not respond to calls from this reporter on the issue.
