JAMMU, Sept 9: Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdullah on Monday called for collaborative arrangements between universities and the research institutions within the country and abroad for achieving the cherished objective of academic excellence.
Inaugurating six-day International Conference on Triggering Discoveries in High Energy Physics, organized by the Department of Physics, University of Jammu, this morning, Dr Abdullah said wider exposure to the students on a larger canvass will place them in good stead in the fast developing world.
“Already much has been done in enhancing the quality of education at various levels, including in the higher education sector and still there is scope for doing more”, he maintained.
Referring to the advancement made in various disciplines, particularly in the energy sector over the years, the Union Minister said that India imports 85 per cent of its energy needs and huge money is being spent on these. “If opting and implementing innovative measures, the money could have been productively used for the betterment of humanity”, he added.
Dr Abdullah said that research is key to progress and advancement and hoped that young scholars and scientists will put in their best in steering the country to the pinnacles of technological development.
Speaking on the occasion, JU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar said that the basic objective of the conference is to find ways and means to find answers to some of the fundamental questions regarding universe, discovery of the elementary constitution of matter and exploring the basic nature of space and time. He called for coordinated efforts to carry out successful research in these frontiers.
Prof Paul Newman, Co-convener, presented the global scenario of the research being conducted in high energy physics at the University of Birmingham, U K.
Prof Bikash Sinha, DAE Homi Baba Chair, lauded the Department of Physics for providing a platform to scientists and scholars to share their views.
Prof Anju Bhasin, HoD Physics & Electronics, said that purpose of the conference is to bring the experimentalists and theoreticians together.
The conference will have detailed discussions on the Higgs discovery and its implication, super symmetry, search for QGP, flavour physics and other searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), neutrino physics, and on related aspects of cosmology and string theory. There are 21 Plenary Sessions and one Poster session.
National and international experts in the field will be delivering talks to explore new areas of research in this field so that new breakthroughs can be made in the analysis of the LHC/RHIC data and future experiments. 150 Students and faculty member from various high energy experiments throughout India and overseas will be attending this conference.
Among others, present in the inaugural session, included; Davender Rana, NC provincial president, Prof Neelam Saraf, Prof Manoj K Dhar, Prof S K Khosa, Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu and Jai Kumar Sharma.
