JAMMU, Nov 6: Maj Gen (Retd) S K Sharma, Board Member, Dogri Organizations Group for Responsive Actions (DOGRA) and former Board Member SMVD Shrine Board, met Prof K S Chandrasekar, Vice-Chancellor, Cluster University of Jammu today.
He put forward the aspirations of the local Dogra community and requested him for giving due weightage to these in accordance with National Education Policy-2020.
Gen Sharma said that despite Dogri being the official language of the UT and having national importance, it is not being taught in schools of Jammu province as a compulsory subject. This has resulted in the younger generations of Jammu region not been exposed to their own language and they tend to miss out knowing their own rich heritage, he added.
“As the number of Dogri knowing students in schools have become less, the input to colleges and universities becomes very less. If this scene continues, it is feared that Dogri will become extinct by the end of this century,” he said.
Prof. KS Chandrasekhar assured Gen Sharma of the best possible efforts from his side to address this issue.
