SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, July 9: As a part of nation-wide strike, various trade organizations/unions held protest demonstrations across the UT of Jammu and Kashmir today.
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) held a strong protest in Jammu but the peaceful protest on working class issues at Sher-i-Kashmir Park, Srinagar was cancelled due to the intervention of local administration. The demand charter of the Trade Union includes- repeal of four new Labour Codes; end to contractualization and privatisation of public sector units; creation of more Government jobs and regular recruitment; raising national minimum wages to Rs 26000 per month; strengthening of rural employment schemes like MGNREGA and introducing the similar programmes in Urban areas; loan waiver for farmers etc.
Addressing the media-persons at Srinagar, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, State president, CITU opposed the move of the administration to cancel the peaceful protest scheduled to be held at Srinagar stating that this move is highly undemocratic. He said the working force comprising daily wagers, casual labourers, scheme workers including anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, CPWs, HDF workers, NHM employees; construction workers; MDM; cooks; handicraft and artisan workers; apple farmers, transport workers; horticulture workers, electricity workers, MGNREGA workers; former employees of J&K Cements Ltd are not allowed to highlight their burning issues, which is gross violation of the hard earned trade union rights.
In Jammu, CITU unit led by Om Parkash working president, Jagdish Sharma, general secretary, Muzar Wani vice president and others held massive protest demonstration at Maharaja Hari Singh Park. The workers were carrying placards in hands depicting their demands. They were also shouting slogans in support of their demands.
LIC employees of Jammu and Kashmir struck work in LIC offices by observing one day strike today under the banner of Northern Zone Insurance Employees’ Association Srinagar Division against the anti-worker, anti-people, anti-farmer policies of the Central Government.
Massive demonstrations were held outside offices of LIC of India across JKUT. This strike is being observed as a part of nationwide strike by nearly 25 crore workers and farmers called by central Trade Unions, Samyukt Kisan Morcha, public sector insurance cos., Banks, Postal, Railway workers and others.
Speaking on the occasion at DO Cell Jammu, Pawan Gupta-Divisional Secretary of the Association demanded immediate recruitment in class 3&4 cadre in LIC, scrapping NPS and restoring Old Pesnion Scheme, Against hundred percent FDI in Insurance sector, against Insurance Laws Amendment Bill, Privatisation of Public Sector, particularly LIC, Merger of Public Sector General Insurance Companies, for MSP to Farmers as per Dr MS Swaminathan report and against Ammended Labour Codes. The total FDI, at present, in insurance sector, is only around 32% of the capital employed and so increasing the limit from 74 percent to 100 percent has no logic.
