Remove encroachments

Division Bench of J&K High Court has taken very serious note of inability of the State Government and particularly the Chief Engineer of Flood Control Department for their failure to remove encroachments on Jhelum and feeding canals as had been ordered by the court. It has to be reminded that one of the serious causes of recent flood in the city was the illegal encroachment of the river bed which obstructed flow of flood waters and caused inundation of Srinagar city. The court has ordered that all encroachments be cleared by December 15, failing which proper action will be taken against the concerned. The encroachments have been made over the years and the concerned authorities of the Flood Control Department have failed to report the same and take action against the defaulters. Knowing that the encroaching persons are influential and politically connected, the High Court has simultaneously ordered the Police Chief to provide all assistance to the Chief Engineer in getting the encroachments vacated. The law must take its course. Millions of poor people cannot be left to the mercy of a few influential and powerful persons. The Court seems to be fully cognizant of this social malady and it is indirectly the indictment of the Government for its failure to perform and govern.
