Remembering pioneer of Homeopathy

Dr Satish Attri & Dr Neena Verma

The system of homeopathic treatment was introduced to the world as a unique approach to cure by a renowned German Allopathic Physician Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann during the year1796. This day every year across the globe is observed as a remembrance and to pay tribute to Dr.Samuel Hahnemann, the Founder of Homoeopathy who left the material world on 2 July 1843 in Paris, France.
Homoeopathy has been verified experimentally and clinically tested to be most effective. The scientific principles propounded by Dr.Hahnemann are natural and well proven and continue to be followed with success. Homeopathy is an effective and scientific system of healing which assists the natural tendency of the body/mind to heal itself. It recognizes that all symptoms of ill-health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and that it is the patient who needs treatment not only the diseased organ. Ever since the homoeopathic medicine is being practiced worldwide, its popularity had soared in recent years due to its inherent virtues.
Integrating Homeopathy in Health Care:- Homoeopathy needs to be promoted not only as an alternative and complimentary but as a complete system of treatment. Homoeopathy is safe, gentle and effective in action. Sweet Homoeopathic pills and liquid dilutions are easy to take and even kids prefer to take it because of no bitterness and its safe for pregnant mothers also. Many surgeries can be avoided using homoeopathic treatment. It’s the second most popular system of medicines worldwide.
Homoeopathy What it means for India
Homoeopathy is one of the most popular medical systems in India, in fact, a close second among the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) services also. There are growing number of users, practitioners, educational institutes, as well as public health clinics, compared to the other AYUSH systems in India. Academic homeopathy institutes comprise nearly 35% of AYUSH colleges, while homeopathy practitioners are 37% of the AYUSH in total. India has the biggest drug manufacture and traders sector in
Homoeopathy. Remembering Master Hahnemann gives all the homoeopaths an opportunity to review the path trodden so far, take stock of the challenges we have been facing and to make strategies for development of Homoeopathy for time to come. There is a need to focus on the quality of education. There is also a need to ensure the production and availability of high quality homeopathic drugs in the market. This is not possible unless the govt & homoeopathic community innovates, modernizes, reinvents, forge ahead jointly, with a variety of initiatives and research projects.
Linking clinical practice with research is must for the development of the homoeopathy. This would needs systematic & methodological recording of cases with evidences, understanding of cases from a research point of view, and to have a broad and finer understanding of clinical research. It would also require the Government platforms to show and enlighten and also to translate the research work into simple, clinical language for use of fellow practitioners and make it acceptable to the government for making policies. With more than 2 lacs registered practitioners contributing in the fields of education and healthcare within public and private sectors, millions of patients are being treated with Homoeopathy every day. But these cases are largely unrecorded in a scientific manner & lacking this means data is unavailable for publication in research journals, or other scientific platforms. This gap between practice and research requires capacity building of institutions and practitioners, both within the private and government sectors and providing such platforms needs government support also.
Homoeopathy is a time tested system of treatment which saved many lives in times of outbreak of various epidemics in olden times since 1813, be it typhus, cholera in 1830 & yellow fever in 1850 or Spanish influenza in 1918 and Japanese encephalitis in some Indians states over the years from 1984 to 2010. Homoeopathic preventive measures have in current situation of pandemic and also last year helped, benefitted many people around the globe. However for chronic and acute diseases homoeopathic treatment is based on individualization.
Among the various CAMs,(complementary and alternative medicines) homeopathy enjoys growing popularity with the lay population, but it is not acknowledged by academia or included in some medical guidelines. The major problem is to establish the effectiveness of this clinical approach using the strict criteria of evidence-based medicine. The aim should be to provide a research roadmap for clinical and epidemiological research for Homeopathy as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the good health needs of citizens. Together we all have to identify and propose strategic actions towards an effective and efficient inclusion of Homoeopathy in integrative care
Homoeopathy: What it means for J&K UT
Homoeopathy is being practiced by many people in J&K since olden times. Late Dr.Durga Dass Arora, retired Astt Surgeon in 1940’s and late Dr.MM Singh Rajan were known to bring homoeopathy to Jammu. In 2003 Government of erstwhile J&K State officially recognized Homoeopathy by passing the Homoeopathic practitioners Act in J&K legislative assembly. At present there are more than 350 qualified but unemployed Homoeopathic doctors including many with MD degrees who need equal share in AYUSH/NHM recruitment policies. If Separate Homoeopathic wing in every Hospital is started then public will get benefited at large. Recruitment of Homoeopathic pharmacists along with Homoeopathic medical officers is also needed as they can focus more on the patient care and on research work. Like other states of country, early establishment of approved Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital will boost homoeopathy in J&K UT, library and Research centers for doctors, Website for online renewal of registration and other information for Doctors & public also, Regular CME’s at Govt level for the Govt & Private practitioners are needed for enhancing research studies on modern diseases.
Lt.Governor of J&K UT is requested to introduce the department of Homoeopathy in all the upcoming AYUSH Wellness centers in J&K and also to open Homoeopathic Dispensaries in J&K as they have a low cost budget and easy to establish in hilly areas also, where homoeopaths can provide their services to suffering Humanity. Promotion of Homoeopathy needs to be at large scale with the cooperation of Homoeopaths and Government involvement is much needed, especially in our J&K where the second most preferred system as per WHO, is still struggling in infancy
