It seems the State Transport Department has reconciled to weekly and even bi-weekly road accidents on the hilly roads of the State that take the toll of precious lives and leave many others maimed and crippled. Why is Government determined to let road accidents happen and take no action against the large traffic establishment? It is a riddle beyond our comprehension. But as we are expected to keep public conscience, we shall not hesitate to write editorially about the sordid administration and functioning of the road traffic department. In most cases, the main reason of accidents has been negligent driving on the part of the drivers. They are either without training and ply the vehicles on fake driving licenses, or they drive in inebriated mood at the cost of innocent and poor commuters mostly village folks. We have in mind two recently happened road incidents, one in Doda area and the other on Srinagar-Jammu Highway. In all 5 persons including a couple were killed in the two stated accidents and 7 others seriously injured. After every road accident and after loss of precious lives in them, the CM and the Governor and other ministers come out with statement of sympathy with the affected families. This is all right but with each assurance from them of tightening the road traffic administration, things are going from bad to worse. This is a serious trend and people are watching the casual attitude of the Government to road accidents and wanton killings. This must stop forthwith.
