NEW DELHI, Nov 2: A delegation of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials met Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh here and sought his intervention for grant of pension benefits, due to them.
In a memorandum presented to the Minister, the members of delegation submitted that the Bank had introduced pension scheme for its employees which was compulsory for employees joined on or after November 1, 1990. However, employees who were already in services at that time were given an option to either continue with the existing Contributory Provident Fund (CPF) or join the new pension scheme. The delegation further pointed out that 2500 of RBI officers and employees were among the ones who were already in bank service then but did not opt for the pension scheme and now they seek the intervention of the government to allow them the same benefit.
While stating that most of these officials and employees belong to the under-privileged socio-economic background, the memorandum sought to offer the explanation that when the new scheme was brought in, the decision to give up Contributory Provident Fund, even of a few lakh rupees for an uncertain pension, appeared to be a big risk and therefore, now they must be dealt with sympathetically.
The memorandum further pointed out that in 2003, the bank introduced the system of upgradation of pension. It is therefore requested that the issue of pension option to pre – October 1990 officials and employees of RBI should not be linked with the pension upgradation and requested that the government should take a more sympathetic and human view.
Dr Jitendra Singh gave a patient hearing to the delegation and said, he would refer the case to the Pensions Department which could, if required, take it up with the RBI authorities.
