Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh will join the function virtually from Jammu or New Delhi as nearly half a dozen projects of his Parliamentary constituency Udhampur-Kathua-Doda will also be inaugurated by the Defence Minister.
“Besides the projects of the UTs of Ladakh and J&K, Rajnath Singh will also virtually inaugurate multiple projects in different States from Leh. Most of the projects have been completed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO),” the sources said, adding that cost of the projects runs into several crores and they will go a long way in providing smooth movement to the people as well as the defence forces.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Brig (Retd) BD Mishra will also accompany the Defence Minister in the function at Leh.
The Ministry of Defence has been giving importance to connectivity up to border posts both along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan to ensure that the armed forces don’t face any problem in their movement, transportation of weapons etc.
Improvement in connectivity is also helping the people living close to the LAC and LoC a lot, the sources said, adding a number of projects scheduled for inauguration will directly help the local population.
Sources said the Defence Minister will also review situation in Eastern Ladakh along LAC with China during his visit to Leh with top Army Commanders.
Situation has been peaceful in Eastern Ladakh after India and China reached an understanding on de-escalation of troops. No untoward incident has been reported for past quite some time now on the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.
As per the sources, some local projects of Ladakh are also scheduled for inauguration by the Defence Minister.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from Ladakh are planning to meet the Defence Minister to project their issues pertaining to development of the Union Territory with him.
Elections to Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council are due in October this year. The BJP is in power in the Council for two consecutive terms and is hoping to stage comeback.
However, with five new districts announced for the Union Territory of Ladakh by the Union Home Ministry which are effective to be in place after some time, it would be seen whether all districts get the Hill Councils or some other structure is announced by the Central Government.
