JAMMU, June 16: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be visiting Northern Command Headquarters in Udhampur on International Yoga Day (IYD) on June 21 to perform yoga with Army personnel while the Central Government has selected nearly 60 iconic places where IYD celebrations will be held.
Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh has been deputed to Group of Temples located at Raja Suchet Singh Palace in Ramnagar tehsil of Udhampur district for Yoga Day celebrations.
In the UT of Ladakh, Union Minister of Law & Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal will join Yoga Day celebrations at iconic Leh Palace.
“Selection of iconic places for IYD functions is aimed at giving boost to religious and tourist places,” officials told the Excelsior.
Two Union Ministers will be visiting Udhampur district of the Jammu region on the International Yoga Day this year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead Yoga Day celebrations at Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
Likewise, many Union Ministers have been deputed to various States/UTs for Yoga Day functions on June 21 at iconic places including the religious and tourist spots. The Government hopes that with IYD celebrations there and surrounding religious and tourist places will attract the tourists and benefit the locals.
The Defence Minister has been performing yoga on every IYD with the troops at different places. However, keeping in view the success of Operation Sindoor in which the Northern Command, headquartered at Udhampur played a key role, Rajnath has decided to visit there for yoga with the troops this year.
The Indian Armed Forces carried out Operation Sindoor from May 6-10 and destroyed terror infrastructure and military bases deep inside Pakistan and PoJK carrying large number of terrorists. The operation was launched to avenge April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians including 25 tourists and a local were killed.
Dr Jitendra Singh, who represented Udhampur-Kathua-Doda Parliamentary constituency, will be performing yoga at Ramnagar, which is part of his Lok Sabha seat.
