CHANDIGARH, Aug 7: In a move aimed at fostering rehabilitation, the Punjab Government has granted early release to 108 prisoners serving life sentences over the past year, citing their exemplary conduct during incarceration.
Punjab’s Minister of Jails, Laljit Singh Bhullar, highlighted that this initiative reflects the state’s commitment to offering second chance to inmates who demonstrate positive behavior and meet the criteria for early release.
The released prisoners, previously held in various jails across Punjab, are part of a broader strategy to promote rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Bhullar emphasized that the justice system should not only focus on punishment but also on enabling individuals to rebuild their lives.
This approach, he noted, underscores the government’s dedication to a compassionate and effective justice system.
To further support inmates, around 800 calling systems have been installed in jails to facilitate legal and family communication, reducing the reliance on unauthorized mobile phones.
Indigent prisoners are provided free calling services, allowing them 10 minutes every 15 days to connect with their families and lawyers. This initiative aims to maintain familial ties and ensure access to legal support, reinforcing the state’s efforts to create a humane and just correctional system. (UNI)
