Protester killed, scores injured in clashes

SRINAGAR, Sept 6: A protester was killed in security forces firing in Anantnag district of South Kashmir while scores were injured as clashes continued across Kashmir amid curfew, restrictions and shutdown for 60th consecutive day today.
A protester, Naseer Ahmad, 21, was killed when security forces fired pellets on protesters at Seer Hamdan area of Anantnag district of South Kashmir. Hundreds of people came out on streets against the ransacking and beating of people by paramilitary CRPF during night raids.
Police and CRPF fired tear smoke and pellets on a violent mob injuring over 50 people including women. Naseer Ahmad received multiple injuries and was declared brought dead at the hospital.
One of the injured woman identified as Jameela, wife of Ghulam Nabi, resident of Seer Hamdan, was also injured during the clashes and her condition is stated to be critical in a Srinagar hospital.
As soon as the news of youth’s killing spread at Seer Hamdan and other adjoining areas, thousands of people came on streets and staged massive protests. The protesters also clashed with security forces who retaliated by lobbing teargas and firing pellets.
Inspector General of Police (Kashmir) Syed Javed Mujtaba Gillani today said the woman was injured in a stampede during clashes triggered by protests against night raids.
Gillani said people are obstructing in the crowd control policing and often the public obstruction becomes the cause of violent protests and civilian deaths.
Massive protests and clashes broke out at Wadoora and its adjoining villages of North Kashmir after a teenager Musaib Ahmad who succumbed to his injuries last night was laid to rest. He was hit by a teargas two days ago and was buried amid massive protests.
At least 40 persons were injured in the clashes. Some of them were injured in teargas shelling on protesters while others were injured in security forces alleged beating.
Authorities imposed curfew like restrictions under five police station areas of Old City including MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and Maisuma in uptown to foil any protests. The security forces were also deployed in large numbers in Habba Kadal, Basant Bagh, Lal Chowk and Batamaloo areas.
Police and para-military security forces were patrolling the sensitive areas and roads were blocked with concertina wires and iron barricades at places where restrictions were imposed by authorities. The shops, business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed and attendance in Government offices was negligible. The traffic was off the roads. However, some private vehicles were plying in parts of civil line areas.
The train services between Banihal and Baramulla remained disrupted while mobile internet and pre-paid mobile services continued to remain suspended for 60th day today.  Seventy five people including two cops were killed and over 10, 000 were injured in the violence that broke out after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8.
In Srinagar’s Mehjoor Nagar and Padshahi Bagh areas, protests broke out during which protesters demolished an abandoned CRPF bunker at Mehjoor Nagar.
Massive protests broke out at Pahloo village of Kulgam district after security forces conducted a raid and arrested 15 persons. Soon after the arrests, the locals took to streets and clashed with Police and CRPF. The security forces fired teargas to quell the protesters during which 20 persons were injured. Protests and clashes also broke out in Pulwama and Shopian districts.
In North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, one Hilal Ahmad Bhat was critically injured in pellet firing by security forces during clashes.
The clashes also broke out at Papchan area of Bandipora district while large numbers of women staged protests at Old Town of Baramula.
In the meantime, separatists today issued fresh protest and shutdown calendar till September 16. They have called for continuous shutdown and protests till September 16 including on Eid-ul-Azha that falls on September 13.
