JAMMU, Apr 17: Hundreds of lawyers today staged sit-in protest over alleged manhandling of one of their colleagues by the police personnel of Gandhi Nagar police station on Main Road, Janipur.
To express their resentment, the lawyers under the banner of J&K High Court Bar Association abstained from work in all the Courts and blocked the vehicular movement on Main Road Janipur.
They raised slogans against the erring police personnel of Gandhi Nagar police station including Station House Officer (SHO) Arun Jamwal.
Traffic however, remained disrupted on the road due to the protest thus causing inconvenience to the commuters.
“One of our colleagues namely Harshvardhan Gupta was manhandled, thrashed and harassed by SHO Gandhi Nagar police station Arun Jamwal over some documents of his vehicle in Nanak Nagar area”, a senior member of Bar Association of Jammu (BAJ) member said.
BAJ member alleged that the lawyer had some verbal dual with the SHO following which he detained him for few hours in police custody and also thrashed him.
The detained lawyer was bailed out later on the intervention of some of the senior advocates, he added.
The protesting lawyers were demanding stern action against the police officer and were of the opinion that no such repeated incidents would be tolerated, in which its members are selectively targeted and harassed by the police without any fault.
The Association has decided to hold its general house meeting on April 19 to chalk out further course of action in the matter.
