JAMMU, Sept 18: Protests erupted outside Government SPMR Commerce College today after a clash between two student groups led to tensions in the area.
Sikh students, supported by their parents and community leaders, gathered outside the college and blocked vehicular movement, alleging that one of their community members was beaten up by another student who had brought goons from outside.
As the situation escalated, SP North, Vivek Shekhar, along with a team from Nowabad Police Station reached the spot to pacify the protestors.
The agitated students, however, demanded strict action and registration of a case against the accused.
The SP North tried to resolve the issue by asking the accused student to appear and apologise publicly, but he failed to turn up.
Later, SP North Vivek Shekhar told the media that the accused had been booked under relevant sections of law at Police Station Nowabad and further investigation was underway.
After his assurance, the protest was called off and the vehicular movement was allowed to ply on the road.
