SRINAGAR, Apr 12: United Quarry Association, Athwajan today staged protests against the allotment of extraction of stones from quarries of Jammu and Kashmir to outside State residents.
The workers belonging to this trade are on hunger strike from last 15 days and today they demanded immediate withdrawal of the contract, which was given to a Mumbai based contractor by Department of Geology and Mining. “The quarries were put on auction only for one day in Jammu and it was impossible for us to reach there on stipulated time,” Latif Mir, President of the association said.
The association members said they were regularly paying royalty towards the Government on time and the Government decision to award the contract to an outsider is not justified. The workers said that they belong to poor families and have no other means of income so as to feed their families.
