JAMMU, Dec 8: Social and political activist Sunny Kant Chib today led a spirited protest demanding immediate action for the deportation of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya settlers from Jammu and Kashmir.
Interacting with the media during the protest, Chib sharply criticized the Union Territory administration, accusing it of failing to initiate meaningful measures to identify and remove individuals residing unlawfully in various parts of the region.
Chib alleged that a large number of these illegal occupants have managed to obtain basic amenities such as water and electricity connections and are living in makeshift shelters erected on state land. He further claimed that several among them are involved in criminal activities ranging from theft to drug-related offences, and said that the Government’s inaction has only emboldened such elements.
Protesters carrying placards reading “Deport Bangladeshis and Rohingyas from J&K” demanded that the administration adopt a firm, structured approach similar to the one implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Government. They urged the UT authorities to launch a comprehensive drive to identify, detain, and deport all foreigners staying illegally in J&K, including the establishment of dedicated detention centres for this purpose.
The protesters also raised slogans accusing the Government of failing to safeguard the interests of local residents. Issuing a clear ultimatum, Chib gave the administration one month to act on the demands. He warned that if the Government does not initiate concrete steps within the stipulated time, a larger and more intensified agitation will be launched to press for the immediate deportation of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis from the UT.
