Promoting culture

Activities on cultural front in Jammu and Srinagar are to be witnessed with satisfaction. The sub-Committee of the Union Ministry of Culture will be visiting the State by the end of this month for field study of Abhinav Theatre in Jammu and Tagore Hall in Srinagar, the two centres that have been engaged in promoting cultural activities ever since independence. Both institutins need renovation and improvement to meet the requirements of present day society. At the same time the prestigious Tehzeeb Mahal, an ambitious project in Srinagar will also be considered for financial assistance besides the two mentioned above. There is recognition on the part of the Government as well as civil society that cultural centers for all the three regions should come up not by trickles but in one big comprehensive and composite sweep. These should become the hub of multi-sided cultural activities with semi-independent segment for each facet of cultural manifestation. Apart from this, decentralization of cultural activities would also mean having mini cultural academies at district headquarters to promote local and indigenous aspects of our composite culture. At present there is an impression of monopolization and centralization of cultural activities. This has to be addressed and hopefully Cultural Academy will suggest a plan of action for the consideration of competent authorities.
