SRINAGAR, Apr 4: Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari today welcomed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s decision to order an inquiry into the recent Ganderbal encounter, asserting that such incidents were “not the first” in J&K.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Maisuma here, Bukhari said the probe must ensure action against those found guilty and that justice must be delivered.
“We welcome the inquiry, but this is not the first such incident in J&K. There have been many such encounters in the past. We hope this ends and justice is delivered,” he said.
Bukhari said he visited Maisuma on the invitation of local residents to assess their issues firsthand, describing the situation in the locality as “deeply concerning.”
He said residents were living in congested housing conditions with a dilapidated drainage system, causing severe hardships.
“They are forced to live in such conditions despite being in the heart of the city. Their problems need immediate attention,” he said, attributing the situation to administrative neglect.
The Apni Party leader also criticised political parties and legislators, alleging that the Assembly was failing to address pressing public concerns.
“There is a drama going on in the Assembly. Those who claim to represent the people should come to places like this and understand their problems,” he said.
He further alleged that public representatives were prioritising personal interests over public welfare.
On the issue of daily wagers, Bukhari accused the Government of “playing politics” over their regularisation.
“Those who have worked for 20 years have a right to be regularised. Lists have already been prepared. What is the Government waiting for-next elections?” he asked, asserting that regularisation must be granted without delay.
He also questioned what he termed a lack of seriousness among political parties on reservation issues.
Reiterating his call for political engagement, Bukhari urged the central leadership to initiate dialogue with the people of J&K.
“I again urge the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to fulfil their promise of dialogue. Come and talk to the people of J&K,” he said.
