JAMMU, Apr 7: Terming girl child as a blessing of God, Minister of State for Information, Education and Culture, Priya Sethi today called for collective introspection for changing those societal perceptions and attitudes that pose hurdles in the development of women in the society.
“There is a need that women should be respected and given their due place, respectability and honour in society,” she asserted
The Minister was speaking as chief guest in a function organized at Govt Girls Higher Secondary School Rehari to create awareness among the masses regarding Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme.
Director School Education, Chief Education Officer Jammu besides teachers and students from various schools were present on the occasion.
Describing education as the most powerful tool for awakening the women regarding their rights and contribution, she said that education among women is very important and special focus should be laid on this aspect particularly in rural and far flung areas. She further emphasized the female fraternity to ensure their equal participation in social, economic, political and cultural affairs for good of their community. It is imperative that the women are empowered and encouraged in every sphere of life, she added
She stressed on adopting zero tolerance against discrimination with women besides eliminating the practices that perpetuate gender inequalities like female foeticide and early marriage etc from the society.
Later, the minister inaugurated nine days National Workshop of Folk Paintings and Sculptures in Kala Kendra.
Being organized by Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalya, Bhopal (IGRMS) in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art Culture and Languages (JKAACL) in which 30 artists from Orissa, Bihar, Maharashtra will participate.
Mrs Priya went around the exhibition and evinced keen interest in the art pieces and lauded the craftsmanship and artistic talents of the artists. She also interacted with the artists who participated in this exhibition.
Commissioner Secretary Tourism and Culture, Shailender Mishra, Commissioner JMC, Saujaniya Sharma, Secretary JKAACL, Haroon Rashid beside various artists were also present on the occasion.
