Private schools’ initiative

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Private schools of Kathua adopt 220 girl students under BBBP’ DE Mar 10.
The initiative taken by the private schools of Kathua under ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’ scheme is laudable and  this makes an excellent example of corporate social responsibility in this region.
The step taken will surely inspire other schools of the State to make similar provisions in their schools. This way we will move ahead in making our girl children not only literate but also self-reliant. Despite awareness and education campaigns launched by various non Governmental organisations regarding gender discrimination, girl child continues to be neglected and ignored not only in rural areas of the country but even in urban areas. The birth of a female child is often regarded as a disaster, and female foeticide is common in parts of India despite the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994. When a male child is born everyone rejoices, but when a female child is born many seem dejected and crest fallen, as if a tragedy has occured.
Realizing the gravity of situation, the Prime Minister of India launched Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Scheme. The scheme is gradually yielding results. It will become successful only if each one of us contributes in this initiative. Private schools have taken the lead, let us follow them.
Yours etc….
