President confers gallantry awards on armed forces

NEW DELHI, Mar 21: President Pranab Mukherjee conferred one  Kirti Chakra and 11 Shaurya Chakras on armed forces personnel  for displaying conspicuous gallantry at a ceremony at the  Rashtrapati Bhavan today.
Three of the Shaurya Chakra were given posthumously.    The President, who is also the Supreme Commander of armed  forces, conferred 14 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, three Uttam  Yudh Seva Medals and 26 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals on senior  officers of the armed forces for their distinguished service. Lieutenant Commander Manoranjan Kumar, who as watch keeping officer of the submarine Sindhuratna and saved lives of 94 crew members before being choked to death was conferred upon Shaurya Chakra along with Subedar Prakash Chan of Kumaon Regiment and Major Abhijai of Corps of Engineers, Posthumously.       Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Jaidev of the Parachute Regiment of the Rashtriya Rifles received the honour for displaying ‘extraordinary valour under heavy fire from close quarters with terrorists in face of certain death.’      He was involved in an operation carried out on June 19 last year,in which three terrorists were killed in Buts village of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir. Two of them were neutralised by Captain Jaidev.      (UNI)
