Premji unveils scholarship for girls

BENGALURU, Sep 19: Azim Premji, founder of the Azim Premji Foundation, today announced the launch of the Deepika Student Scholarship for girls aspiring to pursue higher education, addressing a gathering of enthusiastic students.
He said the initiative was inspired by the increasing number of children attending school and expressing ambitions to go to college, a trend that has filled him with hope and joy for the future.
Reflecting on his 25-year journey with the foundation, Premji said his dream has always been to ensure that every child in India has access to quality school education. “When I meet students today, many tell me they want to go to college. This inspired me to create opportunities for those with the ambition to achieve more,” he said.
Premji also shared personal reflections, recalling that he was born during India’s struggle for independence, a time when the nation faced multiple challenges. Over the decades, he has witnessed India grow stronger and expressed his desire for young people to contribute to building a just, equitable, and humane society.
Looking at the students’ confident and eager faces, he added, “I am sure you will have a bright future, and our country will have a bright future.” He encouraged the students to continue striving for knowledge and personal growth, emphasizing the transformative power of education in shaping both individual and national futures.
The **Deepika Student Scholarship** provides Rs30,000 per year to female students who have completed PUC in government colleges and have enrolled in any general degree, professional degree, or diploma course. It is expected to benefit over 37,000 girl students starting from the academic year 2025-26.
Premji also said that if more than 37,000 eligible students enroll, the government will continue to provide scholarships to all qualified applicants. Around 2,000 girl students, who will be receiving the scholarship, were present at the event. (UNI)
