SRINAGAR, Dec 20: Police today registered a case in connection with a landslide at Khanpora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, which was allegedly triggered by illegal stone quarrying, officials said.
The incident occurred on Friday evening, when a sudden slide of earth and debris came down a hillside, triggering panic among local residents and posing a potential threat to human life as well as public and private property.
According to officials, a police team rushed to the spot soon after the incident, assessed the situation and ensured that no loss of life had taken place.
They said the area was brought under close monitoring as a precautionary measure.
In this regard, Police Station Baramulla has registered FIR No. 219/2025 under relevant provisions of law.
Officials said that an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the landslide and identify those responsible for the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the landslide occurred amid dense smog, which, combined with the sudden movement of soil and rocks, sharply reduced visibility and created an eerie atmosphere in the area.
Videos recorded by residents show earth and stones sliding down the slope, with people seen fleeing the spot in fear.
Locals said stone quarries are operating near the site, though they could not immediately confirm whether quarrying activity directly triggered the landslide.
Officials said a detailed assessment is underway to determine the role of any illegal activity.
