SRINAGAR, Apr 10: In a series of actions against drug trafficking, Police today arrested eight drug peddlers across Kashmir, attached property worth over Rs. 45 lakhs belonging to a notorious drug peddler in Sopore.
A police spokesperson said that in Sopore, police arrested two drug peddlers and recovered contraband substances, including 300 Alpradex tablets and cash worth Rs 22,550, from one accused. Another was found with a charas-like substance. “The arrests were made during naka checking at Neharpora and Batpora under the supervision of SDPO Sopore,” he said.
In Kupwara, a drug peddler identified as Fayaz Ahmad Wani of Lolab was arrested during patrolling in the Bunpora area. A charas-like substance was recovered from his possession, police said.
In Srinagar, police arrested four drug peddlers during two separate naka checks in the Soura and Zakoora areas. “In Soura, police recovered cannabis powder from two accused traveling on a motorcycle without a number plate. In Zakoora, police recovered a charas-like substance from two persons traveling in a load carrier,” he said.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson said in Awantipora, police booked a notorious drug peddler, Javid Ahmad Dar alias Brichi of Lalpora Chatlum Pampore, under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act. He has been lodged in Central Jail Kot-Bhalwal Jammu after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent authority. Police said several cases were registered against him for supplying drugs to local youth.
In another major action, police in Sopore attached properties worth Rs. 45.19 lakh belonging to a notorious drug peddler, Firdous Ahmad Bhat of Mazbugh Sopore. “The attached assets included a two-storey commercial building, a bakery workshop, and part of a residential house, all allegedly acquired from drug trafficking proceeds, he said.
Separately, police in Budgam organized a drug awareness rally at Narbal in collaboration with Celestial Buds High School. Students, faculty, and social activists participated in the rally, raising slogans against drug abuse.
Police have urged the public to share information regarding drug trafficking and assured continued action against those involved in the illegal trade. “We are committed to making our society drug-free,” the police spokesperson said.
