Police foils Muharram procession

SRINAGAR, Sept 21: Police today detained several Shi’ite mourners after they attempted to take out the Ashura procession in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar.
Shi’ite across the Valley on the 8th and 10th day of the Muharram carry out the processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA).
Scores of the Shi’ite mourners attempted to move towards Ganta Ghar in Srinagar to carry out Muharram procession. However, the procession was foiled by the police and several persons were detained on the spot.
Fearing protests or any untoward incident, authorities imposed restrictions in Rainawari, Nowhatta, Khanyar, M R Gunj and Safa Kadal areas of Srinagar. Barricades were also erected in Lal Chowk and Regal Chowk areas of the city centre to prevent Muharram processions.
Government disallowed the congregational Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar by imposing strict restrictions in and around Nowhatta and adjoining areas.
Police and CRPF locked all gates of the Jamia Masjid early today and all roads leading to it were blocked. Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in and around Jamia in Nowhatta area of the old town.
Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that he was not allowed to even attend the Majlis-e-Tableeg to pay tribute to Imam Hussain (RA).
Taking to social networking site twitter Mirwaiz wrote: “Curbs curfew & HouseArrests continue, even on #Aashura ! No Friday prayers allowed at many mosques in the city including #JamaMasjid by the rulers. Even majlis-e-tableeg to pay tributes to #ImamHussian(AS) and #MartyrsOfKarbala which I was going to address,barred! (SIC).”
