Police foil criminal plot, two held with illegal weapons

JAMMU, May 16: Jammu and Kashmir Police today foiled a major criminal plot by arresting two notorious criminals near the Tawi 4th Bridge and recovering two illegal firearms along with live rounds.
A police official said that a police team had laid a naka near the T-point on the bridge when two suspects on a motorcycle tried to flee after being signalled to stop.
However, alert officers chased and caught them, he said.
During checking, he said, the police recovered one pistol, one revolver (sixer), and four live rounds from their possession.
According to him, the accused have been identified as Sumit Verma (20) alias Vansh of Shergarh, Jammu, and Goshu Kumar (20) alias Sahil alias Gudda of Mehmudpur, Jammu.
He said Sumit Verma was already a known criminal with multiple FIRs lodged against him in Bishnah, Gandhi Nagar, and Bari Brahmana police stations.
As per police sources, the duo was carrying weapons to target a rival group.
Meanwhile, a case under FIR number 65/2025 under the Arms Act has been registered at Police Station Nowabad and further investigation taken up.
The operation was led by Inspector Deepak Pathania, SHO Nowabad, and assisted by PSI Aziz Tariq, PSI Vikram Singh (Incharge Police Post Canal Road), HC Jaipal Singh, HC Nizam Din, and Constable Neeraj Kumar.
The team acted under the supervision of DySP Headquarters Farha Nishat, SP City North Vivek Shekhar, and SSP Jammu Joginder Singh.
