JAMMU, Sept 4: Jammu and Kashmir Police in Bus Stand area have foiled an attempt to transport adulterated food items during a midnight operation and seized a large quantity of cheese suspected to be unsafe for consumption.
A police official said on the intervening night of September 1 and 2, a police team led by the SHO Bus Stand intercepted a bus (JK02DJ-9780) and an auto load carrier (JK14K-4589).
During checking of the vehicles, he said, 21 boxes of cheese weighing around 11 quintals were recovered.
The consignment was found without the required documents and was suspected to be in violation of food safety rules, he said.
According to him, the seized items were kept in police custody and the Food Safety authorities were informed.
On September 2, he said, the Deputy Commissioner Food Safety along with his team and Mobile Laboratory Unit visited the police station in presence of SDPO City.
Accordingly, the consignment was formally seized, samples were collected, and prosecution proceedings were initiated against the concerned Food Business Operator, he said.
“Preliminary checks suggest the cheese was adulterated,” the police official said.
He said further legal action is being taken.
