SRINAGAR, Feb 3: Police in Ganderbal today detained a man for repeatedly making false emergency calls to the Dial-112 helpline.
According to authorities, action was taken against Parvaiz Ahmad Saeed, son of Ghulam Ahmad Saeed, a resident of Narayan Bagh, who was found “habitually misusing” the ERSS-112 helpline by making “fake distress calls”, thereby wasting valuable police resources.
“Police Post Shadipora received information through ERSS-112 via PCR Ganderbal that a caller…reported that his wife had been assaulted and requested immediate police intervention,” police said.
Acting promptly, the police post contacted the complainant and rushed a team to the location provided.
However, upon arrival, the caller’s mobile phone was found switched off. Subsequent verification revealed that the complaint was false and misleading, police said.
“Further enquiry brought to light that the caller…is a habitual offender who has repeatedly made fake distress calls, including three false complaints during January 2026 through ERSS-112.”
Police said his actions were deliberate and aimed at creating unnecessary panic while diverting attention from genuine emergencies.
According to the police, based on statements from his wife and other family members, and in view of his repeated misuse of emergency services, “the individual has been detained by Police Post Shadipora under preventive provisions of law to safeguard the sanctity and importance of the ERSS-112 emergency response system.”
Police stressed that ERSS-112 is meant strictly for genuine emergencies.
“Misuse of this vital service not only leads to legal consequences but also hampers timely assistance to those in real distress,” police said.
