Police busts fake currency racket

SRINAGAR, Mar 13: Police in Shopian today busted a fake currency circulation racket and arrested three persons while recovering counterfeit notes amounting to Rs 79,000.
According to police, the action followed a complaint lodged at Police Station Shopian by a local shopkeeper who alleged that a person had used fake currency notes while purchasing goods from his shop.
Following the complaint, a case under FIR No. 33/2026 was registered at Police Station Shopian under relevant sections of law and investigation was initiated.
During the course of investigation, police recovered fake currency notes amounting to Rs 79,000 from the possession of the accused persons and their associate.
The arrested individuals were identified as Mohd Syed Wani, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Wani, a resident of Batpora Shopian; Mohd Maqbool Naikoo, son of Habibullah Naikoo, a resident of Bungam Shopian; and Peerzada Altaf, son of Peerzada Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Tukroo Babnad in Zainapora area.
Police said all the accused have been formally arrested and further investigation is underway to trace the source of the counterfeit currency and identify other persons involved in the circulation network.
Meanwhile, police have urged the public to remain vigilant during currency transactions and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
