SRINAGAR, Oct 24: Police today arrested several drug peddlers, attached illegally acquired property, and conducted extensive searches across multiple districts in Kashmir.
A police spokesperson said five suspected drug peddlers were arrested in Baramulla, Shopian, and Anantnag districts. Contraband substances, including heroin, charas, and poppy straw, were recovered during separate checkpoint operations. “Cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations, and investigations are underway,” the spokesperson said.
In Kulgam, police attached a residential property valued at around Rs 36 lakh belonging to a “notorious drug peddler,” Shahzad Ahmad Dar, under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act. The accused, currently lodged at Kot Bhalwal Jail, was earlier detained under the PIT NDPS Act after police recovered 520 kilograms of poppy straw in 2021.
Meanwhile, police in Ganderbal carried out extensive searches in Wakura, Shuhama, and Koundbal areas, recovering “incriminating material of significant importance.” Authorities also used public address systems to warn citizens, particularly youth, to stay away from drugs.
