NEW DELHI, Apr 12: Families displaced from Mirpur, Kotli, Bhimber, Muzaffarabad, Poonch and other areas of Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), now settled in Delhi and NCR, celebrated Baisakhi with religious fervour and enthusiasm today.
The programme was held at Mirpur Balidan Bhawan in Lajpat Nagar-I and was organised by Mirpur Balidan Bhawan Samity and POJK Youth Forum in collaboration with Jammu Kashmir Peoples’ Forum.
A statement said a large number of displaced families attended the event, reflecting their continued cultural and social unity despite displacement.
The function was presided over by Dr Deepak Kapoor, President of POJK Visthapit Sewa Samiti, Jammu, while Uttam Prakash from RSS was the Chief Guest.
Renu Bhatia, Chairperson of Haryana State Commission for Women, and Dr Sanjogita Soodan, Mahila Pramukh of the Samiti, were guests of honour.
Several prominent personalities, including Justice Anil Dev Singh, former Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court, Bharat Bhushan Gupta, former Registrar General of Delhi High Court, and Justice Vidhya Bhushan Gupta, former Judge of Delhi High Court, who are themselves from displaced families, were also present.
The programme featured drawing competitions, patriotic songs and cultural activities involving children, youth and elders. Awards were distributed among participants by the dignitaries.
Speakers recalled memories of their ancestral places in POJK and highlighted the importance of preserving traditions like Baisakhi celebrations even after displacement. They also expressed hope for the return of POJK to India. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Sudesh Ratan, followed by a community lunch.
