JAMMU, July 31: Retirees of Punjab National Bank from the Jammu Circle, under the banner of the All India Punjab National Bank Retirees Association, staged a day-long hunger strike today outside the PNB Circle Office in Jammu. The protest was aimed at drawing attention to the Central Government and Indian Banks’ Association’s (IBA) prolonged inaction on the issue of pension updation.
The retirees alleged that there has been no updation of pensions since 1987, even though bank employees’ wages are revised regularly. This disparity, they said, is forcing many bank retirees into financial hardship, especially in the face of rising inflation and increasing cost of living.
They accused the Government and bank managements of adopting a dilly-dallying approach, which has left thousands of retired bank employees across India without fair pension adjustments. Protesters demanded that pension updation be implemented on the lines of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) retirees, who have already received such benefits.
The retirees urged the Government and IBA to address their demands promptly and ensure dignity and financial security for those who have dedicated their careers to the banking sector.
