JAMMU, Jan 21: The Prime Minister’s flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) has gathered strong momentum in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Union Territory emerging as one of the leading regions in household-level rooftop solar adoption.
The scheme aims to provide free electricity up to 300 units per month to households through grid-connected rooftop solar systems, promoting clean energy and reducing electricity bills.
Officials said as of December 31, 2025, a total of 17,998 rooftop solar systems have been installed across Jammu and Kashmir. Of these, 16,284 systems have already been commissioned and are supplying solar power to the grid, marking steady on-ground progress under the programme.
They said the financial outlay under the scheme has also been significant, as subsidies have been released to 14,889 beneficiaries by the Central Government and to 2,234 beneficiaries by the UT Government.
“The total subsidy disbursed so far stands at Rs 129.57 crore from the Centre and Rs 2.99 crore from the UT, reflecting the scale of implementation,” officials said.
Under the consumer-friendly subsidy structure, households installing a 1 kW rooftop solar system, with an average cost of Rs 55,000, receive a total subsidy of Rs 36,000, including Rs 33,000 from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Rs 3,000 from the UT Government.
For 2 kW systems, the total subsidy is Rs 72,000, while 3 kW systems receive Rs 94,800, making rooftop solar financially viable for middle- and lower-income households.
The scheme is being implemented through a fully digital platform, ensuring transparency and ease of access.
“So far, 86,905 consumer applications have been received through the national portal. To meet the growing demand, 1,403 vendors have been registered across the UT, and vendor-consumer agreements have been signed in 11,779 cases,” officials said.
They said access to finance has played a key role in boosting participation as a total of 26,225 loan applications have been submitted, with 16,186 loans already disbursed at an interest rate of around 7 percent per annum, covering up to 95 percent of the project cost.
“Additionally, material has been delivered at 2,285 installation sites,” added the officials.
According to them, the implementation is being closely monitored at the administrative level, with Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited acting as State Implementing Agencies.
Meanwhile, the UT Government has also approved Rs 53.53 crore from its budget to support 85,000 residential beneficiaries over the period from 2024–25 to 2026–27.
To raise awareness, over 37.90 lakh bulk SMS messages have been sent and 923 IEC campaigns conducted.
On the technical side, 138 training programmes have been organised, training 2,600 engineers. A strong grievance redressal system is also in place, with 1,154 out of 1,157 complaints already resolved.
Officials said the PM Surya Ghar Yojana is helping reduce electricity bills, strengthen energy security and promote sustainable development in Jammu and Kashmir, while moving the UT closer to its renewable energy goals.
