PM pays tribute to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tributes to Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary and recalled his service to the nation.
“I bow to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his Nirvan Diwas. A great statesman, thinker & patriot, we remember him for his service to the nation,” Mr Modi said in a tweet.
The BJP is new avatar of BJS, which merged itself into Janata Party in 1977 just before the general election held after an infamous spell of emergency.
The BJP was formed as a separate party in 1980 after internal differences in the Janata Party that led to the fall of Morarji Desai government in 1979.
Mookerjee is known for his staunch stance against Article 370, which gives special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
He was arrested on May 11, 1953 when he entered Jammu and Kashmir without a permit which was prerequisite to visit the state. He later died as detenu on June 23.
