According to sources, work is apace on new terminal building of Leh Airport, the foundation stone for which was laid by Modi on February 3, 2019, and the work is expected to be completed in April.
In addition to this, a number of other developmental projects, both from strategic and civilian points of view, are also under construction and are expected to be completed by April this year.
The Prime Minister is likely to visit Leh in April to inaugurate the projects.
It may be mentioned here that the Narendra Modi Government at the Centre has taken up series of roads, tunnels, highways and other projects in the UT of Ladakh which will not only benefit defence forces deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Eastern Ladakh, but also the local population and give boom to the tourism.
While the Leh airport remains fully functional, it is simultaneously undergoing a massive infrastructure upgrade that is set to redefine air connectivity to Ladakh. The highlight of this project is the construction of a new, state-of-the-art terminal building.
Despite the construction activity, Leh Airport continues to operate seamlessly, handling commercial flights and ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for passengers traveling to and from the Union Territory of Ladakh. This continuity underlines the efficiency of project execution, as essential operations remain unaffected.
The upcoming terminal is designed not just as an infrastructural upgrade but as a futuristic model for sustainable aviation in India. With 20 check-in counters, centralized heating and cooling systems, and a passenger handling capacity of 1,000 in both arrivals and departures, the new facility will be equipped to cater to the growing number of visitors to Ladakh-both domestic and international, the sources said.
In a pioneering move, Leh Airport’s new terminal will be among the first in India to run on a hybrid of geothermal and solar power. This dual-energy approach ensures reduced carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and a significant step towards India’s vision of green aviation infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and held detailed discussions on the overall development and welfare of the region.
During the meeting, the LG briefed the Prime Minister on key developmental initiatives, welfare schemes, and major infrastructure projects currently underway in Ladakh. He highlighted efforts being made to strengthen road and air connectivity, improve public infrastructure, and ensure the timely delivery of essential services in the geographically challenging and strategically significant region.
Gupta also apprised the Prime Minister of initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable tourism, preserving Ladakh’s unique cultural and ecological heritage, and creating livelihood opportunities for local youth. Issues related to education, healthcare facilities in remote and border areas, and the implementation of Central Government schemes were also discussed in detail.
The LG emphasized the administration’s focus on inclusive growth, good governance, and people-centric development, particularly in far-flung areas that face harsh climatic conditions. He shared feedback from the grassroots regarding public aspirations and developmental needs, underlining the importance of continued Central support for accelerated progress in the Union Territory.
The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts being made for inclusive growth in Ladakh and reiterated the Centre’s continued support for the region’s all-round development and the welfare of its people.
