NEW DELHI, Nov 21:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited US President Barack Obama to be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day.
‘This Republic Day, we hope to have a friend over …invited President Obama to be the first US President to grace the occasion as Chief Guest,’ Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
It could not be immediately ascertained whether the US President had accepted the invitation. Its acceptance would be a major diplomatic victory for Prime Minister Modi since no US President has so far been the Chief Guest at the Republic Day Parade.
Mr Modi had held talks with Mr Obama in Washington in September when he visited the US to attend the UN General Assembly.
Relations between the two countries were on a downslide last year in the wake of the Devyani Khopragade episode. (AGENCIES)
