Jammu, June 24: The Public Joint Action Committee for Akhnoor – Jourian Road has threatened mass agitation if the long pending work on Akhnoor-Jourian road is not commenced within 15 days.
Talking to media persons, here today, convener of the Joint Action Committee, S P Sharma said that Akhnoor – Jourian Road should be completed departmentally by the BRO within a period of 15 days failing which stringent action may be taken against the erring officials of the department executing the job.
Recalling that the widening work of the said road had commenced from Km 1 to 18 in January 2011, which was to be completed in 180 days, Mr Sharma lamented that the whole project has been hanging in air for the last more than 4 years resulting in irreparable loss to the business community, transporters, daily commuters going to offices, schools, hospitals, colleges and other destinations. “The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has been instrumental so far as non completion of the road is concerned. The monitoring by BRO has been poor as is evident by the fact that no drastic action has been taken against the contractor executing the work despite delay of more than 4 years and despite a chain of letters / reminders and writ petition in the High Court,” he said.
Comparing the access to road with right to life, the Public Joint Action Committee alleged that fundamental rights of the people of the area have been violated due to unprecedented delay in construction of the road, which is the life line of the people of the area. “The Joint Action Committee is of the view that agencies responsible for the human loss, financial loss to the business community and transporters and public at large due to the dilapidated condition of the road deserve all out and exemplary retribution for the said inordinate delay in completing the road work,” Mr Sharma said.
President of the Action Committee Baba Bharti and general secretary Bodh Raj Khajuria were also present in the press conference.
