Srinagar, Sept 3: Scores of photojournalists working for local, national and international publications today protested here outside Press Enclave against thrashing of their colleagues by policemen at Batamaloo area while they were performing professional duties.
Holding placards and their cameras, the photographers under the banners of Kashmir Press Photographers Association (KPPA) staged a sit-in protest. According to KPPA, the policemen at Batamaloo on seeing the lens-men who had arrived to cover curfew stopped them and when they showed curfew passes, the cops declined to honour these passes, tore them and started abusing and beating them ruthlessly with canes.
Seeking action against the erring cops, the photojournalists during their protest said that time and again they are being subjected to thrashing and harassment. As the protest was underway, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Amit Kumar, arrived on the spot and assured action against the policemen accused of beating nearly six photojournalists.
